Nancy Durand is a nonprofit attorney and governance strategist with more than two decades of legal experience. She advises mission-driven organizations across the nonprofit lifecycle, from formation and tax exemption through organizational growth, restructuring, leadership transition, and dissolution.

Her legal practice focuses on nonprofit governance, employment and workforce matters, internal investigations, and complex organizational risk. Her work includes advising boards and executive leaders through consequential decisions, organizational disputes, questions of authority and accountability, and other matters where legal obligations and organizational realities intersect.

She helps boards understand and carry out their fiduciary responsibilities, guides organizations through sensitive governance and personnel matters, and brings clarity to difficult situations when the stakes are high.

But Nancy's perspective is shaped by more than legal practice.

She has served on and chaired nonprofit boards, founded nonprofit organizations, led committees, and worked alongside leaders responsible for making difficult decisions with limited resources and competing demands. She understands that knowing the rule is only part of the job. Nonprofit leaders must also understand what the rule means for the decision in front of them, and how to carry that understanding into practice.

That experience led Nancy to create Good Works Legal Solutions.

Over the years, she saw the same problem repeatedly. Many small and mid-sized nonprofits do not have consistent access to legal and governance guidance. Too often, leaders seek legal help only after a conflict has escalated, a governance problem has become difficult to unwind, or an organizational decision has already created risk.

Nancy believed there was a better way.
